  ALT International's Lifeguard Training program provides students with practical lifeguarding techniques as well as leadership development, customer service, and transferable life skills experience.  In addition to learning proven lifeguarding methods, participants build self-confidence, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and increase their fitness levels.

    Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned professional, our instructors are committed to your learning success by offering ample practice opportunities, effective coaching, and timely feedback.  ALT International classes are fully equipped with several stations of actual rescue equipment to prepare candidates for real-life emergencies.

    As a learner in an ALT International program, you will receive plenty of feedback and coaching due to our low student-instructor ratios.  Our skillful instructors have undertaken intensive instructor training to provide learners with practical, relevant, and realistic applications based on their extensive lifeguarding experience in a variety of rescue settings.  In addition, many of our instructors are champion lifeguard competitors.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

 
     
  Are you ready to be a lifeguard?  If you are at least 16 years old and hold a Bronze Cross award, you are eligible to enroll in our ALT International-Lifeguard Basic program!
     
  ALT-Lifeguard Training ALT International is one of the most experienced aquatic training agencies in Canada.  Our comprehensive training program offers a "one-stop shop" for all your lifeguard certifications.  Candidates learn specialized techniques to prevent aquatic emergencies and upon successful completion will be awarded the Lifesaving Society's National Lifesaving Award, the renowned Advanced Lifeguard Training Award, Standard First Aid, and CPR "C" - all for one low price!

NLS Fitness Component: recover a 20lb weight from the bottom of the pool.

ALT Fitness Component: swim 50m head-up breast stroke in under 60 seconds, and recover a 20lb weight from the bottom of the pool.

    Prerequisite: Minimum 16 years, Bronze Cross

ALT International  / Aquatic Leadership Training

     
  'Assistant Water Safety Instructor  
 

 

Course Description: This course is the prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course.  The core of the course covers the theory that supports instructional skills including teaching methodology, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.  Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are certified as Assistant Water Safety Instructors, which enables them to co-teach the Red Cross Swim programs under the supervision of a fully certified Water Safety Instructor.

*The 8 hours of teaching experience allows candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the skills and knowledge through practical application. 

Pre-requisites: 15 years old and Red Cross Swim Kids 10 skills and strokes or equivalent.

  Water Safety Instructor
 

 

Course Description: The Water Safety Instructor Course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach Red Cross Swim programs. The course focuses on how to effectively apply the information learned in the Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course to these programs. Other topics include instructional emergency response skills and stroke development, drills, and corrective strategies.

*The 12 hours of teaching experience allows candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the skills and knowledge through practical application. 

This course is worth 2 grade-12 high school credits.

Pre-requisites: 15 years old & Assistant Water Safety Instructor.

 High School Credits

 
     
  British Columbia and Yukon high school students may use their Bronze Cross, Lifesaving Instructor, NLS, Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI), and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications for external high school graduation credits towards high school graduation.   The Red Cross First Aid Instructor program is also eligible for external credits for high school students 18 years of age and older.  
     
  Credits  
 
  1. Bronze Cross is worth two (2) credits for Grade 11
  2. Lifesaving Instructor + Bronze Cross are worth three (3) credits for Grade 11
  3. NLS is worth two (2) credits for Grade 12
  4. AWSI is worth two (2) credits for Grade 10
  5. WSI is worth two (2) credits for Grade 11
  6. Red Cross First Aid Instructor is worth two (2) credits for Grade 11.
 
  Details  
 
  1. Students may only use these credits for the assigned grades [i.e. students cannot combine both certifications towards one grade].
  2. The awards do not need to be current.
  3. If the student has already used Bronze Cross for two (2) credits, then completes Lifesaving Instructor at a later date, they can replace the two (2) credits from Bronze Cross with three (3) credits for Lifesaving Instructor and Bronze Cross combined.
  4. There is no limit to the number of external credits that can be credited for elective courses.
  Process  
 
  1. Students are asked to inform their school counsellor in charge of curriculum that they wish to use these certifications as part of the "External Credit Program".
  2. Students will be asked to provide proof of their certification card(s).
