Did you know that home swimming pools account
for 38% of all toddler drownings in Canada? A child can
drown in as little as one inch of water. Don't become a
statistic! Follow these guidelines for a safe and fun summer
in the backyard pool.
Guidelines:
- Always supervise activity in the pool.
- Clearly mark deep areas.
- Never dive into an above ground pool.
- Keep safety equipment, a first aid kit, and a phone nearby.
- Do not drink and swim.
- Train all family members in First Aid and CPR.
- Fencing should be at least 2 meters (6 feet) high and
completely surround the pool. This fencing should not
surround the house.
- Gates should be self-latching and self-closing.
Self-locking mechanisms are ideal.
- Store pool chemicals in clearly labeled, childproof
containers in a locked area.
- If a child can climb it (e.g. toys, garden furniture, tools,
etc), do not place it near fencing.

CPR class near you or arrange one for your neighborhood. ALT
