Course Description:
This course is the prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety
Instructor Course. The core of the course covers the theory
that supports instructional skills including teaching
methodology, learning styles, physical principles, progressions,
communication, safety supervision and feedback. Upon successful
completion of the course, candidates are certified as Assistant
Water Safety Instructors, which enables them to co-teach the Red
Cross Swim programs under the supervision of a fully certified
Water Safety Instructor.
*The 8 hours of
teaching experience allows candidates to demonstrate their
understanding of the skills and knowledge through practical
application.
Pre-requisites:
15 years old and Red Cross Swim Kids 10 skills and strokes or
equivalent.

Water Safety Instructor |

Course Description:
The Water Safety Instructor Course further develops
instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and
teach Red Cross Swim programs. The course focuses on how to
effectively apply the information learned in the Assistant Water
Safety Instructor Course to these programs. Other topics include
instructional emergency response skills and stroke development,
drills, and corrective strategies.
*The 12 hours of teaching experience allows candidates to
demonstrate their understanding of the skills and knowledge
through practical application.
This course is worth 2 grade-12 high school credits.
Pre-requisites:
15 years old & Assistant Water Safety Instructor.

British Columbia and Yukon high school students may use their Bronze
Cross, Lifesaving Instructor, and NLS certifications toward high
school graduation. |

Credits |

|
- Bronze Cross is worth two (2) credits for Grade 11
- Lifesaving Instructor + Bronze Cross are worth three (3)
credits for Grade 11
- NLS is worth two (2) credits for Grade 12

Details |

- Students may only use these credits for the assigned grades
[i.e. students cannot combine both certifications towards one
grade].
- The awards do not need to be current.
- If the student has already used Bronze Cross for two (2)
credits, then completes Lifesaving Instructor at a later date,
they can replace the two (2) credits from Bronze Cross with
three (3) credits for Lifesaving Instructor and Bronze Cross
combined.

Process |
|

- Students are asked to inform their school counselor in
charge of curriculum that they wish to use these certifications
as part of the "External Credit Program".
- Students will be asked to provide proof of their
certification card(s).
